Working on Some Cool Stuff (at least I think it is)

When I find some time I’ve been working on a couple new projects. Both are curated collections of things that interest me- and might interest you, too.

The first is (just another) Distraction, which is pretty much what it sounds like. When I find something online that grabs my attention, I share it there so it can grab your attention too, an escape out of your head for a few minutes. I’m open to adding contributors to add online distractions they find, so if you think that’s something you’d be interested in let me know!

The second project isn’t really new- I’m expanding Basement Vinyl from just a podcast to more of a full-service blog. I’ve been covering little interesting vinyl related stories that I find. I know a few of you who read this are vinyl fans, so would love your feedback over there. I’m also working on a BV site re-design, not sure when that will be ready for primetime, but it’s coming along.

So, what are you up to?

Tracking 2010: eleven days in and…

I’m planning to periodically post updates about where I am with certain goals I’ve set just to keep myself on track. This is the first of those. Feel free to ignore.

Weight loss

The goal I’ve spent the most time on is weight loss. I haven’t started an exercise routine yet, but the diet is going pretty well, I’m down 4 pounds. It was a little dicey over the weekend, I got really hungry at night but managed to keep putting myself off until I was more tired than hungry and went to bed. I did use up a bunch of my extra weekly points on vodka Saturday night, though.

Spending

Felt the need to get out of the house Saturday afternoon, but didn’t really have anywhere to go- so I went to Home Goods & Borders. Since one of my goals is to not purchase anything I don’t need for 10 weeks (which not coincidentally brings me right up to my trip to Austin) it was sort of a test, since I rarely leave either store without a purchase. I did buy something at Borders- but it was a gift for someone else, so it falls under “stuff I need.” Instead of buying I surreptitiously took pictures with my iPhone of books I might want to buy later. I’m getting better at surreptitious picture taking.

Creativity

The surreptitious picture taking will hopefully lead somewhere (nothing sketchy…) I did some work on a new design for Basement Vinyl- what I really need to do is make a plan of action for that site, to make it into something more. I never intended it to be just a podcast- and obviously my instincts on that were right on.
I did a little research into DSLRs, towards my Big Fun Goal of buying one this year. I figure I need to come up with around least $1500 to get the kit I want and will actually use. The new Panasonics have the edge right now with their smaller camera bodies, something I’ll pay extra for because it’s more likely I’ll lug the thing around. Of course, by the time I come up with the money, who knows what else will be out there. Everyone is yelling Nikon & Canon at me because of the extensive lenses and accessories available, but I’m not kidding myself into thinking I’m going to go crazy with this stuff. And I’ve been very happy with our point & shoot Panasonics… even if they didn’t pick me for their Living in HD program. Definitely need to make a field trip to B&H in NYC. Yes, there’s a good camera shop right here in town (Beach) but any excuse to go to B&H…

Color Status

I found this in my Facebook inbox yesterday morning from a local friend:

Something fun is going on….write the color of your bra in your status. Only the color nothing else. And send this to ONLY gals no men. It will be neat to see if this will spread the wings of Cancer Awareness. It will be fun to see how long it takes before the men will wonder why all the girls have a color in their status…lol

I did a quick scan of my newsfeed and saw that the message had already started to spread- friends in NJ and England (who don’t know each other as far as I know!) had already posted their colors (“white” and “dark blue”.)
I posted “beige… no, peach”

Then the colors picked up some speed.

Very colorful, ladies. Obviously I need some new bras!

Plans and goals and what-not.

I’m off to a cranky but good start this year. Seems like lots of little annoyances are getting to me, but I’m doing my best to shove past them.

I decided on a whim to join Weight Watchers online on January 1. I downloaded the iPhone app (geek) and so far so good- day three and I have points leftover today! I’m going to have a Christmas cookie while I watch the Jets.

I’ve started a list of goals for the year. The most expensive one is to buy myself a DSLR camera. It’s been a secret/guilty desire for decades, and I finally figured it’s now or never, which is the same reason I joined WW. I’ve spent too long saying “someday.” Of course, I can’t afford a DSLR, so I’m working on a plan to save up for it.

Another goal- try one new thing each month. Haven’t gotten to the part where I figure out what those things are yet, though.

We’re on the hunt for a new dog. Looking for a specific type- young (no older than 3), female, smallish, calm and very tail-waggy. Yes, I’m being picky, but I’m in no rush. I plan to start haunting the shelters, and if you hear of one that seems to fit the bill, let me know!

I have plenty to do with and for the kids- Nick in particular as we head into the real work of college admissions!

Finally, I’ve got gift certificates for a massage, a spa, and a VERY expensive restaurant to cash in. I’ll save that last one for after I hit my goal weight, but I’m really looking forward to the massage!

My Top 30 Songs of the Aughts

Is it really the end of the decade? Technically no, but “best of the decade” lists are everywhere so I jumped on board.

I started just going through my iTunes and grabbing songs, then I whittled it down, and whittled it down- and found I couldn’t get the list any smaller than this. It still hurt to leave some off, but I wanted a manageable list, so top 30 it is!

They’re in chronological order because I couldn’t decide how else to rank them, although if I had to choose I think Everlong would be number one.

In the End Linkin Park 2000
Beautiful Day U2 2000
It’s Been Awhile Staind 2001
The Rising Bruce Springsteen 2002
My City of Ruins Bruce Springsteen 2002
Do You Realize?? The Flaming Lips 2002
Times Like These Foo Fighters 2002
Bring Me to Life Evanescence 2003
Hey Ya! OutKast 2003
Everlong Foo Fighters 2004
City Of Blinding Lights U2 2004
Fall to Pieces Velvet Revolver 2004
Long Time Comin’ Bruce Springsteen 2005
Every Day Is Exactly The Same Nine Inch Nails 2005
Chicago Sufjan Stevens 2005
Fix You Coldplay 2006
Not Ready to Make Nice Dixie Chicks 2006
Crazy Gnarls Barkley 2006
What Goes Around…/…Comes Around Interlude Justin Timberlake 2006
Chasing Cars Snow Patrol 2006
Long Walk Home Bruce Springsteen 2007
The Pretender Foo Fighters 2007
Time to Pretend MGMT 2007
Don’t You Evah Spoon 2007
I Will Possess Your Heart Death Cab For Cutie 2008
Cath… Death Cab for Cutie 2008
Sex On Fire Kings of Leon 2008
House Of Cards Radiohead 2008
Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked Cage the Elephant 2009
You and I Wilco 2009
(I was going to link to each of these but then I figured if you want any of them you probably already have them, and if not you can just head to Amazon and run a search for ‘em yourself :) .)

You will not agree with all or most or maybe any of my choices. That’s the beauty of music, and all art. But I am curious about what some of yours are! Comment!

Have I abandoned this blog?

Blogher thinks I have- they’ve pulled their ads from my sidebar (which is their right according to the TOS I agreed to, of course.) While I don’t make a fortune from them (read “nada”) I still keep them there because I’ve had every intention of going back to blogging more often, and making some extra pennies from it would be nice.

I have been posting content, but it’s all going to Twitter, Facebook, and Posterous. I used to send the Posterous stuff back here, too, but I get ten time more page views there than here.

Makes you go “hmm.”

So I’m rethinking my blogging strategy, once again. If you are one of the few who only keep up with me via my blog, I guess I’d suggest that you either follow me on twitter or subscribe to one or both of my Posterous sites (banannie’s posterous- better name to come- is my own content, mostly photos but occasionally other stuff, and (just another) distraction is for interesting things I find.) Or all of the above. But don’t unsub from here just yet- something is bound to pop up now and then!

101 Lists

101I just noticed that I’m on 101 Twitter lists. Lists are a new feature that let you group people you follow any way you like, publicly or privately. I have a few lists myself: Jersey people, funny people, creative people- and a couple private ones that include the folks I like to follow a little closer than the rest.

listsWhat’s cool about being included in lists is that it gives you a little glimpse into how other people see you. I’m on some NJ lists, some WordPress and geek lists, and others that just make me smile. Some of my faves include

  • the-good-shit-list
  • smartladies
  • smartypantses (defined as “The SmartAssii.”)
  • respect
  • women-that-rock
  • mega-helpful
  • team-hot-salad-dressing
  • boobenvy
  • the-awesome-squad
  • sunshinepandacakeparty
  • makemesmiletoo
  • awesomesauce
  • ny-mets-fans

Thanks everyone who’s listed me! I need to spend some time making a few more myself- what other groups can I come up with?

November 6, 1979

pnb-79Thirty years ago I invited a cute boy to a high school dance. I remember it so clearly- the nerves, the fear, the determination (I wanted to go to that dance!) the competition (another girl wanted to ask him but I got there first.)

I cornered him backstage at DBP (literally, I backed him into a corner behind the flats) during a drama club rehearsal. He said “Sure, ok.”

Happy anniversary, Boccio.
