Local news, the old fashioned way

Just had a relaxing breakfast. Coffee, cereal, and a peruse of the paper.

I like to follow local news in the paper rather than online. Maybe it’s because I stay more focused when I’m away from the computer. I can easily sit and read long articles sitting at the dining room table, but the same articles lose my interest within moments online. Can’t really explain that, but it’s a fact.

Today I came across a couple things that made me smile, and one that made me growl.

Smile-worthy:
Young N.J. drummers are chosen for Obama’s inaugural parade
A group of teen boys living in a residential treatment center not far from me have a leader-less, uniform-less drum corps, but despite the lack of enough drumsticks to go around they’ve been chosen to march in the inaugural parade on January 20.

Moved by patients, committee clears medical marijuana
I’ve always supported legalization of marijuana, for a number of reasons. Permitting medical use is a logical first step.

Growl-worthy:
N.J. lawmakers limit college aid program
I have my issues with the NJ Stars scholarship program, which offers free rides to community college for our best and brightest (why limit it to community college? Oh, because most of these kids are receiving scholarships to four year schools and have no interest in a two year degree, so few take up the offer? Yeah, I know.) But now it will be limited even further. Education is the first thing to go when times get tough, which is incredibly short-sighted, but of course the easy road to take.

Paper in the recycling bin (except the sports and comics for the kids to read later) and on with the day!

I feel the same way about reading the paper, though I’ve been tempted to cancel our subscription lately as they cut back further and further on local columnists.
