A little audio test

I’m teaching myself how to make an audio podcast. Unfortunately I’m having issues with my new Blue Snowball microphone. As in, it doesn’t work. Based on testing I’m pretty sure it’s just defective so I need to replace it.

Meanwhile I downloaded an app for my iPhone called iTalk from Griffin, which lets me record audio directly to the phone then easily transfer the file over wifi to my MacBook for editing. I’d tried a couple other audio apps and I was less than impressed with the sound quality (I mean- I sounded like I was talking on a phone!) so my hopes weren’t high.

But iTalk impressed me! The quality is great, in fact even when I sat the phone on my desk and spoke from about 18 inches away it still sounded clean and clear. I imported the file and edited it with Audacity. Next time I’ll try to add some music, but working with just a single track was surprisingly easy for a newbie like me. The levels are a little wonky but that’s because at one point I picked up the phone and held it closer to my mouth, and my attempt to level it all out wasn’t great. Next time I’ll be more conscious of that.

So have a listen if you like.

I have a DEVICE called iTalk by Griffin. I got it for Christmas 2005. It was the first time someone actually got me something off my list, in I don’t know how long. I have never used it. Its intended use was to record my weekly voice lesson, so I could stop using cassette tapes for that purpose.

Right after Christmas, my voice teacher went into the hospital to be treated for an ongoing problem with irregular, erratic heartbeat. In mid-January, she was sprung and called to let me know she was seeing students again. And the day before my lesson, she died.

After 20 some-odd years, I really didn’t need voice lessons any more. I pretty much know all there is about how to make my voice do what I want it to. I was still studying because it was my routine, because I enjoy it, because it was a way to keep seing my teacher on a regular basis. A few months after she passed away, I moved to Florida. I never seriously considered taking up lessons again with anyone else.

So the iTalk device sits in the box. Never been used!
