Is this what we’ve become?

I don’t post about politics much here. I got into the habit of keeping my politics to myself at some point.

But sometimes I need to speak up.
Read this. And this.

It’s getting scary out there. At McCain rallies hateful words (”Kill him!” “He’s a terrorist!” “Traitor!“) are spewed, and the candidate has refused to speak out against them. In fact McCain is stoking the fire with claims that Obama is the terrorist’s friend.

Read this:

This is a moment of maximal physical danger for the young Democratic nominee. And McCain is playing with fire. If he really wants to put country first, he will attack Obama on his policies – not on these inflammatory, personal, creepy grounds. This is getting close to the atmosphere stoked by the Israeli far right before the assassination of Rabin.
-Andrew Sullivan

These attacks aren’t about politics and policies. They are personal attacks based on fear, bad information, and rumors. Is this what we’ve become as a nation?

The tanking economy is only going to make desperate, fearful people more desperate and more fearful. McCain needs to speak out against the hatred now. Before it’s out of control. Hopefully it’s not too late.

Added 8pm: Apparently Senator McCain has begun to address this. I hope this means he’ll stop stoking the fire, and I hope his running mate will follow his lead.

  • This will be the first election I am voting in... and I must say Ron Paul is the only candidate that is honest... and believable.
