if I'm ill, I have 'horizontal days' - that is, I stay in bed, but still do computer-y things I'd have to be nearly dead to actually spend a day off-line like that :)

Years ago, before remote access into the office, I would take a sick day if I felt too much like crap. You really cannot tolerate the long hours of a 4 hour round trip commute day when you are feverish. It takes too much out of you, and you end up even sicker. Plus, the firm went through this phase of "sick building" a couple of years, where you'd get better, and then the building would make you sick again, so they started encouraging people to keep their germs at home.

When remote access became common, "taking a sick day" translated to "well, I'll just telecommute today". Now that I am a full time telecommuter, I pretty much have to be 3/4 dead to take a full sick day. I mean, look what happened yesterday. Dentist appt that did not go well, unexpected pain and suffering, and what did I do when I got back? I remoted in, cleaned out my email, returned some phone calls, took a coupla meetings, and didn't really give up the ghost until late in the afternoon.

Might be I'm a martyr. Might be we don't get as many paid days off as we used to. Might be there's been a cultural shift in corporate America. Might be I just get bored in the absence of intellectual stimulation, even if I'm 3/4 dead. Might be all of the above!
