Setting off Fireworks

Warning, heavy geekery to follow:
I’m devoting the next few weeks to learning as much as I possibly can of Adobe CS3. I dropped way too much money on it, for work you know. In fact I have needed PhotoShop & Illustrator, but the rest of it, even Dreamweaver which I once lived by, I manage to ignore. Expensive ignorance, I know. I’ve become especially enthralled with Fireworks. I used to own Fireworks MX for Windows before Macromedia sold it to Adobe along with Dreamweaver, but this version has little in common with that one outside of the name.

So I’m dropping even more money and signing up for lynda.com so I can learn what the heck all this software can do. It’s all so overwhelming- I’ve never been exactly patient, and I want to get it without having to learn it. But learn it I must.

If I had it all to do over again I’d major in graphic design. I know how to take someone else’s design and turn it into html & css, but my lack of formal knowledge about design itself leaves me sometimes stranded and feeling like a poseur. Sure, I could take classes now, and I probably will- but I figure I can get a head start by at least learning more about how the common design software works. At that point I can learn more about design theory and technique.

So if I’m scarce over the next few weeks this is why. I was going to wait until a complete lull in my work schedule but (thankfully) that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon. So between work, whipping the yard into shape for summer, painting and doing some minor home redecoration, I’m going to bury myself in Fireworks lessons.

See you when I’m ready to set off what I’ve learned!
