Jeff Pulver attended the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions and writes that the swag bag that attendees received contained a CD of music from inductees, as well as a package of 30 blank CDs.

Jeff writes

I am still trying to understand what the meta message was from the Rock Hall of giving everyone the package of blank cDs. Do they want us to copy the CD they gave us and give it to 30 of our friends? I found that give way just wrong for a music industry event…even if everyone can benefit from having some extra blank CDs in their home.

It does seem kind of bizarre. An event celebrating the industry that has gone completely overboard in fighting against copying and sharing of music provides the raw materials to do just that.

Maybe it was simply a mindless distribution of whatever free stuff was offered to fill the bags- but I prefer to think it was a little piece of subversion that hints at the undercurrent within the industry that’s trying to change the way music is distributed.
