Flickr Fun, WordPress Work

twitter twitter twitter twitter twitterHaven’t been here much, seems I have time to write 140 character tweets and take photos but to sit down and think an idea through long enough to make it work in the blog- no time for that.

I’ve also been checking my themes and the plugins I use within the latest WordPress upgrade. Looks like most are fine, but a couple major plugins I use aren’t. So I’ll delay upgrading a couple of the blogs I manage (including this one) till I can find a workaround or the plugins are fixed, I guess. Familiarizing myself with the upgrade so I can get to work on some new themes, hopefully by the end of the week!

As I linked above, I’m doing the 10 for 30 photo challenge that Twitter friend AnnOhio started up. Take 10 photos, of anything, each day for 30 days. Upload them to Flickr to the 10 for 30 group and join the fun! I’m done through day 3. I’m afraid I might run out of things to photograph! It’s going to take some imagination, creativity and idea stealing (shh) to make it though 30 days, we’ll see how it goes. It’s already lots of fun, seeing what catches other’s eyes and sharing comments. You come play too!

I’m over here *waves madly*

crazyeddie.jpgSeptember is INSANE! (thanks to YesbutNobutYes for posting all those Crazy Eddie commercials yesterday!)

The kids are back to school so we all have to get into a more structured routine after hanging out all summer. The groups I volunteer with follow the school calendar so September is the busiest time. The kids’ activities are starting up. My activities are starting up (bowling, book club), my husband’s activities are starting up!

I got more work than expected this summer, which was wonderful! But it did mean that the fun projects I’d expected to do got shoved aside in favor of income-production.

Time to prioritize. I can’t do it all at once, but if I plan well maybe I can do it all… eventually.

One decision made (well, made again…): this site will remain my home base. Anything else I do online will always be somehow connected back here. The sidebars have feeds from my tumble log, Flickr and Twitter, and links to Facebook and Linked In. I have a bad habit of always wanting to be in on the ground floor of the Next Big Thing but it’s time to jump off for awhile. Wheee!

So to find me, all of me, Google banannie, or Annie Boccio, or better yet just subscribe to this blog and pop in once in awhile.

Or not ;).

Having a day

If I was going to use this blog to complain about stuff, today is a day I would be doing that.

But I’m not, so I won’t.

My complaints aren’t anything major, anyway. I’m more concerned about friends who have bigger problems.

Wishing a quick return to “normal,” whatever that is, for everyone!

LIVE, from NEW YORK, it’s 35!

Head over to Synchronis.tv for the amazing previews, then tune in tonight at 9pm et (and each evening through Sunday, and again next week Wed-Sun) for “35” a LIVE scripted drama, not on TV, but on your computer at ustream.tv.

Kathryn Jones and her team are trying something really unique and cool here, can’t wait to see!

Talking Politics on Twitter?

My friend Jim Long (an NBC camera operator) was covering an event involving a group called Move America Forward, and he twittered “amazing how polarizing this war is. now the rhetoric has shifted to calling on war dissenters to leave this country.” Later he added “sometimes the polarization in this country saddens me. i know there is a broad range of political views here [on Twitter], somehow we keep it in check.”

It brought up something I’ve been thinking about lately. I follow over 200 people, almost all of whom follow me back. Those people make up a community. And my experience with online communities when it comes to political discourse hasn’t been all that positive.

During the 2004 election season, on forums as seemingly innocuous as the DisBoards*, the vitriol and contempt being spewed on both sides got really out of hand! In fact the DisBoards, a huge and well-established community, took down their Debate forum, because there was little debate and much name calling. Again, all this on a site where the commonality was a love of a magical family vacation spot.

So here I am on Twitter, with 200+ friends. And I know they come from all over the political spectrum. People talk about politics in a general, non-confrontational way, and it’s all good.

But we in the US have a presidential election coming up. As a participant I hope people continue to keep from nastily arguing politics on Twitter. Don’t misunderstand- I’m not in favor of any kind of censorship, or expecting people to pretend to agree. But maybe we can discuss it respectfully? It can be done. I’ve seen it. I’ve done it!

I guess in the end the benefit of Twitter is that if you don’t want to hear what someone is saying you can simply remove them from your list, a much simpler process than having someone banned from a forum, although most forums do have an ignore feature that mostly goes unused. People just like to argue, I guess.

We’ll see how it goes!

*the DisBoards are forums for fans of Walt Disney World, but a large community has developed there that discusses life, the universe, everything. It’s a great resource if you plan to travel there, by the way!
