Blog Day 2007 - Fun Reads!

Today is Blog Day!
The site suggests that we find 5 blogs we enjoy that are different from our own culture and link to them.

Instead I’d like to link to some blogs I read regularly that are specialized little treats. Not really personal blogs, not focused on business. just fun reads.

Ironic Sans. A very creative guy tosses his ideas out there for your amusement and enjoyment. An excellent recent example? Breed a “Mickey” Mouse.

Minus by Ryan Armand. A hand-drawn and water-colored then scanned weekly comic about a little girl with amazing powers. It’s often wordless and sweet, and at times a little terrifying.

Passive-Aggressive Notes. Just what the title says. Readers send in scans and photos of passive-aggressive notes they’ve found, received, or sometimes even written.

Post Secret This one has almost classic status if there is such a thing. Readers send in homemade postcards on which they reveal their deepest secrets. Some are sweet, some are funny, some are frightening. A new batch is posted each Sunday.

Thursday is Bazaar Day. Blogger Melissa Maples is an American living in Turkey. Each Thursday she and her trusty camera head to the local bazaar and the resulting photos are funny, and, well, bizarre! Her amusing captions add to the fun.

All five of these are low volume (some post once a week- or less) and a fun way to escape for a few minutes. Any similar blogs you can recommend? Post in the comments!

Do not taunt happy exercise ball chair

I’m gently perched back on my exercise ball after a months-long switch back to my very un-ergonomic chair.

I was back to the chair for a couple reasons. The big one was that during the migration from PC to my new MacBook I had both computers (and three monitors) set up around me, and an exercise ball isn’t made for swiveling. I found I’d start rolling off the thing whenever I reached for the PC keyboard.

The other reason, I must admit, was a bit of residual fear after Leo Laporte reported that his had popped out from under him. While the ball feels thick and sturdy, I wasn’t sure I wanted to risk it.

But the time in the Ugly Red Chair hasn’t been fun. In fact for the past few weeks I’ve had a pain in my hip when I stand up. So with the PC moved to another room and hip pain keeping me pumped full of advil, I decided it’s time to roll the ball back into place. Today is day one, rebooted.

So far so good. Hip pain=gone, posture=better. I’ll keep you appraised.

PS- if you’re my friend on Facebook you can see my exercise ball!

If you could see me dancing around the room right now…

Just got my grubby little hands on a download of “Radio Nowhere” from the upcoming Bruce & E Street album Magic.

Niiiiiiiice.

Now playing: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - Radio Nowhere

A quick post while the computer does its thing.

Since I returned from my vacation my butt has been practically glued to my chair (which reminds me that now that I’m no longer swiveling between two computers I should switch back to the exercise ball!) I’ve been working on a few different projects, and while I complain about it I’m actually glad the weather’s been so crappy. It makes staying inside on the computer easier.

This is the work I like, though. Two different clients have presented me with problems needing solved. This is stuff that gets me to try new ways of doing things, search through forums for hints to adapt to my own issues, and get that satisfying feeling you get when you make a project work.

Ah, I see the file upload I was waiting for is done. Time to dive back in and get another problem checked off my list!

OBX and why you wish you were me (for a week)

beach crowdLast week we headed down to Duck in the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the second year in a row to spend some time with family and friends. It’s a long, convoluted story I won’t go into right now, but basically a group of my sister-in-law’s friends began to travel to Duck every year, and as time wore on more “hangers on” joined up, including us. Depending on who was counting there were either 17 or 21 families there this year.

J & Richie's houseIt’s a great trip. We all stay near to each other in huge homes of two or more families, a short stroll to the beach (some even staying on the beach.) The younger kids have playmates, the teens have freedom, karaoke at the luauand the adults lay on the beach all day and party every night.

It’s not perfect. Unfortunately our cousin (and vacation house-mate) had a medical issue that completely disrupted his family’s stay (but he’s recovering and all is well now.) Some of the teens take advantage of the freedom, some of the younger kids hit a wall of exhaustion. yes, ma'amAnd sometimes the neighbors don’t appreciate karaoke on the driveway at 10pm and call the police. It’s a nine hour drive from here each way, which makes a 2 week stay very tempting. The price keeps that a dream, of course.

But despite the few drawbacks, it’s one helluva good time. We pack as much fun and sun into those seven days as in the entire rest of the year. I even took a refreshing break from the internet, despite the fact that I’d brought my Macbook along. P1030463Just checked my email a few times and used it to prove via snopes.com that the moon and Mars will not be 35 miles apart on August 27 (yes, this was a serious discussion one night.)

For one week, you wish you were me.
