Social Network Overdosing

I can’t stand it anymore! I belong to at least 10 social networks, plus a couple email lists and a few forums.

No one has that kind of time.
Even this barely employed freelancer/SAHM. Except maybe those lucky few who get paid to bounce around the internet socializing (hiring? Call me, babe!)

Facebook- three strikes, yer out. I tried. Even spent some time there this morning adding applications and seeing how friends are using it. What a bother. If I belonged to a specific group of people who used it as a base I could see it being useful. I’ll keep the account. Probably strip down to the basics and direct people who find me there to come here.

Pownce- spent the past two days playing with Pownce. The simplicity of Twitter still works better for me. Reples and sets have their place but I much prefer the single line of tweets running down the page. I jump in, I jump out.

So, here’s the deal.

This blog is my home base. I have complete control over the look, feel, layout, domain. Everything I want to share publicly is findable from here.

Banannielog is where I put the fun/interesting stuff I find and want to share.

Twitter is where I hang all day. Want to really get to know me? Follow my tweets.

Flickr is where my photos are. I love to look at other people’s photos, too, so friend me there.

Facebook, iLike, Pownce & Jaiku are just toys for now. I’m there, I’m not there. But people who find me there find the link to come here. Maybe I’ll find them to be more useful someday, maybe not.

Del.icio.us is where my links are. Most are boring if you’re not me, but I’ll probably add a link to my sidebar here one of these days. I’m on Ma.gnolia too and like it but I haven’t spent much time there. Del.icio.us wins because of it’s Firefox integration.

LinkedIn is definitely something I’m going to spend more time on. Sure, anyone who Googles me will find all the other stuff, but LinkedIn is where I can focus on what I can do. Expect to see my LinkedIn page looking good by autumn.

Now that I’ve written all that out I think it makes me look slightly insane. No wonder my brain is swimming! Simplify, Martha, simplify.

If you get multiple offers for paid internet bouncing-around, feel free to redirect leftovers to me.

  • I have my blog. And email. And AIM, though I rarely sign on to that anymore. I am so 20th century!

  • I hear ya, sistah!! I feel exactly the same way. I DREAD when a new social network pops up. I end up getting an account but rarely visit and stick to my staples. I guess the reason why I end up joining is that fear that everyone will jump ship and I’ll be left talking to myself all alone. Well… Twitter is the thing for me and I love my Flickr acct.

I have the others as well and don’t have the time, energy or desire to bounce from network to network updating stuff. In light of Indepence Day… via la freedom to just say NO! hehee
