First weekend in May

The first weekend in May always brings two things without fail. First, the lilacs finally bloom. They’re my favorite flower, my favorite scent. Unfortunately two of my kids have bad tree pollen allergies, so I can’t cut them and bring them inside any more! But I can see them outside, and when the breeze blows in through my window I can catch a whiff of their scent!

The other thing that comes each first weekend of May- Big Trash Pickup Week! In our town we can put almost any kind of junk out to the curb and during the first week of May the township will drive through and pick it up. This weekend all through town people are dragging out their junk, and at the same time others are cruising through in pickups and SUVs to pick through the trash looking for treasure.

In our case we’re getting rid of a number of water-logged items thanks to the recent storms. Luckily none of it was particularly valuable. We’re also getting rid of some old toys. I tried selling these at a garage sale last year, but now they’ve become dirty and wet from construction and flooding, so out they go. Most have already been picked up by the scavengers, though, so they may have life in them yet.

I miss lilacs! I have one bush, but they don’t do as well here as in the north. Maybe it’s the milder winter, which is a tradeoff I can live with.
