I stopped by to visit with my parents today, and my dad mentioned that he’d missed a show on WNYC (the New York NPR station) that he’d wanted to hear.
Dad, welcome to podcasts!
He has iTunes and an iPod Shuffle, so it was simple enough to walk him through the steps to the treasure trove of NPR broadcasts and other goodies. For free even!
But that’s not all! My mom’s computer has been slowed to a crawl lately, even after a professional cleaning. They’d been considering their new computer options, one of which was to get a Mac. The concern, though, was that she wouldn’t be able to run software for what she needs on a Mac.
What does my mom do on her computer?
- She reads and writes email
- She surfs the internet
- She looks through photos
- She does a minor amount of word processing
- She plays World of Warcraft for about six hours per day*
All of this can be done easily and quite well on a Mac, of course. The decision then suddenly became one of MacBook vs. iMac. iMac won that since she’s not all that interested in lugging the thing around (and they have my dad’s notebook PC for travel and such.) One more decision, screen size. I says- go BIG!
Click click click through the Apple screens, and with zero customization necessary (a big wow for me after buying seriously customized Dells), a 20″ iMac is on order for my mom.
Amazing what a geeky daughter can accomplish in one afternoon.
Next, I shall use my powers to convince them that buying a MacBook for me will somehow make life easier for them. The wheels are turning, my friends!
